As a teenager in the late 1960's Frank Vanderpuil was one of the regular dancers on the popular Saturday afternoon TV show, American Bandstand, hosted by the famous Dick Clark. Frank was a wonderful dancer and in 1967 he and his partner won the 1967 Dance Contest. They each won a color TV, a very big deal in 1967. His prominent dance style was California Swing which was beginning to fade in popularity by the next year. It was a joy to watch Frank dance and I and many others were stunned to learn he had passed away so young. Videos of Frank and other Bandstand dancers (including the '67 Dance Contest) are available for viewing on YouTube.

In 1950, in the year that Franklin L Vanderpuil was born, in February, Joe McCarthy gave a speech alleging that he had a list of "members of the Communist Party and members of a spy ring" who worked in the State Department. He went on to chair a committee that investigated not only the State Department but also the administration of President Harry S. Truman, the Voice of America, and the U.S. Army for communist spies - until he was condemned by the U.S. Senate in 1954.

In 1963, when he was merely 13 years old, the British Secretary of War, 46 year old John Profumo ,was forced to resign when he lied about an affair with 19 year old Christine Keeler. Keeler was also involved with the Soviet naval attaché and charges of espionage were feared. No proof of spying was ever found.

In 1965, at the age of just 15 years old, Franklin was alive when from August 11 to 16, riots broke out in Watts, a Black section of Los Angeles. An allegedly drunk African-American driver was stopped by LA police and, after a fight, police brutality was alleged - and the riots began. 34 people died in the rioting and over $40 million in property damage occurred. The National Guard was called in to help the LA police quell rioting.

In 1971, by the time he was 21 years old, in March, Intel shipped the first microprocessor to Busicom, a Japanese manufacturer of calculators. The microprocessor has since allowed computers to become smaller and faster, leading to smaller and more versatile handheld devices, home computers, and supercomputers.

In 1988, in the year of Franklin L Vanderpuil's passing, on December 16th, 1988 the popular film Rain Man was released. Featuring Dustin Hoffman and Tom Cruise. this film brought attention to autistic savants and was based on the "megasavant" Laurence Kim Peek. The film would later go to win four Oscars including Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, Best Director and Best Actor in a Leading Role.
